2010 Overall Record: 42-18 (70%)
Week 6 Stream of Consciousness: Taylor Martinez is fast. I mean, really FAST. He made the entire KSU defense look like they had lead bricks in their shoes... Stephen Garcia is number 5 in the NCAA in pass efficiency? Hear that sound? That is the sound of the galloping horses of the apocalypse... A&M is bad. Why couldn't Arkansas capitalize? perhaps the "gulf" between the SEC and the rest of the country isn't as great as some thought... What has happened to Pitt???... Oregon State took it to Arizona, setting up a rematch of last year's "Civil War" for the (last) PAC-10 title... Upset? No. The Utes stuck it to Iowa State, scoring 68 (68!!!) on the Cyclones' defense, in Ames... Upset? Almost... I was so so close to getting this one (Kentucky over Auburn), but alas... It's official. Les Miles worships Satan. Spread the word... Wow Ohio State is good-they beat a Miami team in a hard-fought game... that just got pounded by the same FSU team that was destroyed by OU...
Week 6 WTF?!? (special voters edition!)
WTF, voters? 19 Voters had South Carolina behind Alabama this week. Question: Did you, or did you not, watch the beatdown the Gamecocks put on the Tide? Trick question. Either way, it is inexcusable. One voter even had Alabama a full TEN SPOTS above USC. jeeeeeeez.
WTF, voters? Utah beat a Big 12 team (granted, Iowa State) on the road, by FORTY-ONE points (68-27)... and dropped a spot.
WTF, voters? Iowa is ranked above Arizona. Just three weeks ago, the teams played. And you know what happened then.
WTF, voters? Oregon State has lost by a combined 22 points to the nos. 3 and 4 teams in the nation, and just beat a ranked Arizona squad.... and they are still lower than Florida, who has also lost to two top ten teams, but has beat.... Kentucky? (the Beavers aren't ranked at all in the Coaches, actually receiving fewer votes than Texas, whose loss to UCLA is looking worse and worse with each extra game the Bruins play.)
Finally, WTF, Texas Tech Kickoff team? I can't explain it. Just watch.
Matthew's Top 25. My rankings will officially come out next week (as will the BCS), but until then, here is my chance to correct all the errors I just railed on. Note: these are solely my opinions and do not reflect what the computer rankings next week will be (the computer loves Missouri!).
1. Boise State - Boise's singular close game (@VT) is better than any of the other candidates' close games.
2. Oregon - Ducks' O is ballin'... the defense may or may not need to improve to get to the BCS.
3. TCU - Quality win over Oregon State is looking better and better.
4. Ohio State - Buckeyes' schedule is pathetic (Miami imploding doesn't help), but I get the feeling this team could beat any of the teams below it.
5. (tie) Nebraska / Oklahoma - Both teams had WTF games (vs South Dakota State and Utah State, respectively) but both have also had big wins on national television (at Washington, at KSU; and vs. Florida State, respectively). OU's schedule has been tougher, but Nebraska's been truly dominating against opponents. This weekend should give a metric by which to compare (Texas at Nebraska).
7. Auburn - the Tigers keep winning close games, but they keep winning. Tops in the SEC right now.
8. Utah - the Utes are gearing up for a winner-takes-all showdown with TCU in a few weeks.
9. South Carolina - gotta put the 'Cocks up over 'Bama here.
10. Alabama - got exposed against USC... and those wins over Florida and Penn State are looking worse each week.
11. LSU
12. Michigan State
13. Arkansas
14. Stanford
15. Oregon State
16. Florida State
17. Arizona
18. Iowa
19. Wisconsin
20. Nevada
21. Oklahoma State
22. Air Force
23. Missouri
24. West Virginia
25. Michigan
GOTW - Michigan State 34, Michigan 17.
GOTW Prediction Record: 5-1 (83.3%)
Why I was right:
- the Spartan Defense bottled up Denard Robinson, and forced 3 INTs from the young QB
- the Michigan Defense was unable to contain... anyone... on the MSU O, which gained over 500 yards on the day.
- Michigan State won three in a row against the Wolverines for the first time since 1965,66,67.
